I started practicing Iyengar yoga in 2003 and right from the first class I knew I had found something special. Aligning, opening and extending my body had quietened my mind. The glimpses of stillness and peace I experienced hooked me to yoga for life.
I was living and working in Washington D.C. at the time, though it would be more accurate to say that I was living in my head. I had just completed a two-year postgraduate degree and was now spending most of my day at a desk, researching, analysing and writing in the high-pressure environment of an international organisation. My shoulders had moved closer to each other and my chest had began to cave in. Work was fascinating, but also stressful.
After my first class, I started practicing yoga regularly and gradually began to see its beneficial effect on my body and mind. My posture improved; I gained more strength, stamina and flexibility; I learned to connect with my body and began to feel more grounded. Tensions would get released during practice and I felt replenished, more centred and positive. Since then, yoga has been an important element in my life.
I qualified as Introductory Iyengar Yoga teacher following two years of rigorous teacher training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Maida Vale, London. I continue to deepen my knowledge of yoga and develop my teaching skills by studying with senior Iyengar yoga teachers from the UK and abroad.
I offer Iyengar yoga group classes in and around Brighton. I am a member of Iyengar Yoga (UK) and Iyengar Yoga Sussex.
I worked in international development for ten years, living overseas and travelling extensively. I hold a MPhil in Development Studies from IDS, University of Sussex, UK.
